When you bring your pet to Caring Hands Animal Hospital, you see a team of people working together to keep your four-legged family members healthy. You may see the veterinarian examining your pet, our client service team greeting you at the front desk, and a veterinary technician coming in to take your pet’s temperature or collect a blood sample. But what you may not see is everything that happens before, during, and after that appointment to make sure your pet receives the care they deserve.
And that is exactly why we want to talk about our veterinary technicians.
Because they are so much more than “just technicians.” They are your pet’s nurses, advocates, comforters, and caregivers. They are the people who often spend the most hands-on time with your pet, getting to know their personality, recognizing when something seems off, and making sure they feel as safe and comfortable as possible while they are with us.
Think about everything a nurse does for a human patient. They monitor vital signs, administer medications, collect samples, assist with procedures, watch for changes in a patient’s condition, communicate with the medical team, and help patients understand their treatment. Veterinary technicians do all of those things, too—except their patients cannot tell them where it hurts, explain how they feel, or ask for help. Our technicians must rely on their medical knowledge, careful observation, experience, and intuition to recognize what each animal needs.
A typical day for a veterinary technician can include drawing blood, running laboratory tests, taking X-rays, administering vaccines, calculating medication dosages, placing IV catheters, monitoring anesthesia, assisting with surgery, and caring for sick or injured patients. They prepare medications, maintain medical equipment, sterilize surgical instruments, document treatments, and help ensure that every detail of your pet’s care is handled properly. They work alongside our veterinarians to carry out treatment plans, monitor patients, and communicate important changes that could affect medical decisions.
But the medical side is only part of the story.
Sometimes, being a veterinary technician means sitting on the floor with a nervous dog until they feel comfortable enough to approach. It means speaking softly to a frightened cat, offering a favorite treat, or taking a few extra minutes to earn a patient’s trust. It means recognizing that a normally happy dog is unusually quiet, that a cat is showing subtle signs of discomfort, or that a patient needs a little extra attention before a procedure. Animals cannot always tell us what is wrong, so our technicians learn to pay attention to the smallest details.
And sometimes, it means doing the things nobody ever thinks to ask about. Cleaning up after a sick patient. Preparing a treatment area for the next animal who needs help. Staying close to a recovering patient and watching their vital signs. Double-checking a medication calculation. Restocking supplies between appointments. Answering questions about home care. Helping a family understand how to give medications or care for their pet after surgery. All the little things that keep a hospital running smoothly are part of providing good medicine, and our technicians handle countless details like these every single day.
Their work also extends far beyond the treatment room. They help reassure worried pet parents, explain what to expect during recovery, and celebrate when a patient who has been feeling terrible finally starts acting like themselves again. They share in the excitement of a new puppy’s first visit, the relief of reassuring test results, and the joy of watching a patient recover. They also stand beside families during some of their hardest moments, offering comfort and compassion when a beloved pet is seriously ill or when it is time to say goodbye.
Veterinary medicine is not always easy. Our technicians spend long hours on their feet, lift and restrain patients, manage unpredictable situations, and juggle multiple responsibilities throughout the day. They experience the excitement of helping animals get better, but they also carry the emotional weight of caring for patients who are suffering. They may go home thinking about a difficult case, a patient they wish they could have helped more, or a family going through a heartbreaking loss. And then they return the next day, ready to open their hearts and give their patients the very best care they can.
That kind of dedication deserves to be recognized.
During National Veterinary Technician Week, we celebrate these incredible team members and the knowledge, skill, patience, and compassion they bring to our hospital. But the truth is, they deserve that recognition every week of the year. Veterinary technicians are an essential part of veterinary medicine, and the care they provide makes a difference in every corner of our hospital. They help our veterinarians do their jobs, help our patients feel safer, and help our clients feel supported. They are often the steady hands holding a paw during a scary moment, the watchful eyes monitoring a patient after surgery, and the gentle voice reassuring an animal who does not understand what is happening.
To our veterinary technicians at Caring Hands Animal Hospital, thank you. Thank you for the extra time, the long days, the attention to detail, and the countless things you do that may go unnoticed. Thank you for advocating for patients who cannot speak for themselves, for treating every animal with compassion, and for showing up even on the difficult days. Thank you for the patience you give our nervous patients, the kindness you show their families, and the dedication you bring to your work. You are so much more than your job title, and our hospital would not be the same without you.
And to our clients, the next time you visit us, take a moment to thank your pet’s technician. Behind every blood draw, every treatment, every reassuring update, and every gentle touch is a person who has dedicated themselves to caring for animals. They may not always be the person you see the most during an appointment, but they are often doing far more than you realize to make sure your pet receives excellent care.
They are not just technicians. They are your pets’ nurses, advocates, and caregivers, day in and day out. And during National Veterinary Technician Week, we are proud to celebrate the amazing people who make that care possible.
Happy National Veterinary Technician Week from all of us at Caring Hands Animal Hospital!
